7 Deadly Sins

What are the seven deadly sins and why is it so important for us to do our best to avoid and/or eradicate them from our lives?

First off the 7 Deadly Sins are:

Pride
Envy
Wrath
Sloth
Greed
Gluttony
Lust

If you heard the name “Capital Sins”, they are the same as the 7 Deadly Sins. Pope St. Gregory the Great finalized this list in 579 after a few hundred years of discussion among various theologians. They are mostly followed by Catholics, however Protestants like Calvin observed them too. Originally adhered to by monks but has expanded to all Christians.

The reason these particular sins are so bad is because they lead to other sins or vices and one deadly sin can lead to another deadly sin. These sins can lead one to Hell or a long time in Purgatory. So, it is best to eradicate them from our lives as much as possible. The deadly sins allow the devil to enter in and draw you away from God.

Pride – extreme love of self, arrogance, haughty, egotistic, vain, conceit, smug or more important than others
This is the opposite of humility or modesty.

Envy – jealousy, covetousness, bitterness, begrudge, craving for happiness, talents or possessions of others, resentment
The opposite of love, good will, kindness or contentment

Wrath/Anger – hatred, revenge, belligerence, furious, rage, ire, hate, temper
The opposite of calmness, happiness, peaceful, kind, or gleeful

Sloth – laziness, lethargic, sluggish, indolence, idleness, do-nothing, neglect in physical or spiritual matters
The opposite of active, busy, vigor, energetic or liveliness

Greed – extreme desire or love for material wealth or power, selfish, longing, excess anything
The opposite of generosity or benevolence

Gluttony – excessive craving for food or drink, piggish, desires more of something, overconsumption, abuse of drugs, food, alcohol, tobacco or medicine
The opposite of apathy, indifference, dislike, merciful or giving

Lust – intense sexual desire, also extreme craving of money, power or fame
The opposite of chastity or purity

Have you thought about the 7 deadly sins and how they affect your life both the physical and spiritual? Most people have not. How one sin will lead to another and then to another if not checked? Before you even realize it you have committed all 7.

These sins are very, very serious and should be preached about in Sunday sermons. Conquering these sins one by one will bring you closer to God and get you into Heaven, perhaps without any Purgatory. This is where the church has drastically failed its people. They no longer teach about sin and how to overcome or avoid it or how to get to Heaven. Some religious don’t believe in Hell, Heaven, Purgatory or the Holy Eucharist. How sad! Hence, they are not Catholic. How is the laity to learn, know or grow in their faith & holiness in today’s world if the clergy fail teach them? How are they going to get into Heaven their true home?
